Bulverket, forskningen och potentialen i en nästan 100 år gammal forskningsingång
Abstract
Research on the underwater archaeological site of Bulverket has been ongoing for over 100 years. Bulverket was a large square wooden platform, built in the middle of a large shallow lake on northern Gotland in the early 1130s. On top of the platform were numerous houses constructed with a wide variety of contemporary building techniques, including wickerwork, stave construction, corner-post construction, and also timber-joint construction. The remains of the houses have been preserved remarkably well in the lake sediment. The site has been investigated several times and has generated debate about its original purpose. The paper recognises the potential of a 98-year-old research approach that differs from previous research and shows what it can contribute to Gotlandic research.
