For many years, sea bathing was considered more a cure than a pleasure. But by the late nineteenth century, people flocked to the coast to relax and enjoy the pleasures of the seaside. Beach life became a favourite theme for artists, who captured people on sunlit shores, surrounded by windswept sands, sparkling water and shimmering light. Art shaped our enduring love affair with the sea.
